Triazolam falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group American Elder interacts with.

Theoretically, taking American elder might increase levels of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here's the basic idea with Halcion (triazolam). Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break this sleep medication down and clear it out. In test-tube studies, American elder appears to slow that same enzyme. If it does the same thing in people, triazolam could hang around longer and build up, which might mean stronger and longer-lasting effects like next-morning grogginess, heavy drowsiness, dizziness, or trouble with coordination and memory.

I want to be honest though: this is only theoretical, based on lab work, not real patient studies. A little culinary elderberry is unlikely to be the issue. Still, since triazolam is potent, it's worth a quick word with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing it with concentrated elderberry supplements.

American elder is a North American plant whose cooked, ripe berries and flowers are used mainly for colds, flu, and general immune support. The science behind these uses is limited and most studies focus on the closely related European black elder (Sambucus nigra), so benefits are uncertain. Only properly prepared berries and flowers should be used, since raw berries, leaves, bark, and seeds can cause poisoning.

What Is Triazolam Used For?

Triazolam tablets are approved for the short-term treatment of insomnia in adults. Treatment is generally intended for 7 to 10 days. Halcion (a brand of triazolam) is specifically indicated for this same short-term use in adults.

Using triazolam for more than 2 to 3 weeks requires a full re-evaluation by your doctor to rule out an underlying medical or psychiatric condition driving the sleep problem.
