Almotriptan falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Atractylodes interacts with.

Theoretically, atractylodes might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
In animals, atractylodes administered at high doses has been shown to inhibit CYP3A1 activity, which is a homolog to the human CYP3A4 enzyme. This effect has not been shown in humans.

Here's the gist for almotriptan (Axert). Your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear this migraine medicine out. In lab dishes and animal studies, atractylodes seems to slow that same enzyme down a bit. If that happened in people, almotriptan could hang around a little longer than usual, which in theory might mean stronger effects or more of its usual side effects, like sleepiness, dizziness, dry mouth, nausea, or that tight, flushed feeling in the chest or neck.

Now the reassuring part: this is only a theoretical, lab-based concern, rated minor, and it hasn't been shown in humans. Everyday cooking amounts almost certainly won't matter. Still, if you take concentrated atractylodes supplements, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

About Almotriptan

What Is Almotriptan Used For?

Brand names: Axert, Almogran

Almotriptan tablets are used to treat migraine headache attacks — with or without aura — as they happen. They are not for preventing migraines before they start.

In adults, almotriptan tablets treat acute migraine attacks. In adolescents ages 12 to 17, almotriptan tablets treat acute migraine headache pain in those who typically have attacks lasting 4 hours or more when untreated. Note that in adolescents, the effect on migraine-related symptoms such as nausea and light sensitivity was not established in clinical trials. Almotriptan is not indicated for cluster headache or for hemiplegic or basilar migraine.
