Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the gist with almotriptan (Axert) and tragacanth. Tragacanth is a gummy fiber that swells into a thick gel in your stomach. The concern is purely about timing and absorption: that gel can physically grab onto a swallowed tablet and either slow it down, speed it up, or do nothing at all. This isn't about how almotriptan is broken down by the liver. It's just the gel possibly getting in the way of how the pill dissolves and gets absorbed.

For a migraine drug you want working fast, slower or uneven absorption could mean weaker or delayed relief when you really need it. The good news is this is theoretical, based on how the fiber behaves, not on solid human studies. A simple fix is spacing them out: take your almotriptan first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before any tragacanth. Run it by your pharmacist if you use it regularly.

Tragacanth is a plant gum used mainly as a thickener and emulsifier in foods, cosmetics, and medicines, and traditionally to soothe the throat and gut. There is very little solid human research showing it treats any specific condition. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but anyone with allergies or who is pregnant or breastfeeding should check with a pharmacist or doctor first.

About Almotriptan

What Is Almotriptan Used For?

Brand names: Axert, Almogran

Almotriptan tablets are used to treat migraine headache attacks — with or without aura — as they happen. They are not for preventing migraines before they start.

In adults, almotriptan tablets treat acute migraine attacks. In adolescents ages 12 to 17, almotriptan tablets treat acute migraine headache pain in those who typically have attacks lasting 4 hours or more when untreated. Note that in adolescents, the effect on migraine-related symptoms such as nausea and light sensitivity was not established in clinical trials. Almotriptan is not indicated for cluster headache or for hemiplegic or basilar migraine.
