Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the simple version: tragacanth is basically a gel-forming fiber. When you swallow it close to your dicyclomine (Bentyl), that slippery gel can physically grab onto the pill in your gut and change how much actually gets absorbed. It could lower the amount that reaches your bloodstream (so your IBS cramping isn't controlled as well), or it could shift absorption the other way and leave you with more anticholinergic side effects like dry mouth, blurry vision, constipation, or feeling lightheaded.

I'll be honest, this is a theoretical concern based on how the fiber behaves, not something proven in studies. An easy fix is spacing them out: take your dicyclomine first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before the tragacanth. If you use it regularly, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

Tragacanth is a plant gum used mainly as a thickener and emulsifier in foods, cosmetics, and medicines, and traditionally to soothe the throat and gut. There is very little solid human research showing it treats any specific condition. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but anyone with allergies or who is pregnant or breastfeeding should check with a pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Dicyclomine Used For?

Brand names: Bentyl, Formulex, Antispas, Dibent, Dilomine, Or-Tyl, Di-Spaz injection, Di-Spaz

Dicyclomine hydrochloride — available as capsules, tablets, oral solution, and intramuscular injection — is indicated for the treatment of functional bowel/irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). All supported formulations share this indication.

The oral forms (capsules, tablets, and oral solution) are taken long-term as prescribed. Dicyclomine Hydrochloride and Bentyl intramuscular injections are intended only for short-term use — no more than 1 to 2 days — in patients who are temporarily unable to take medication by mouth.
