Tragacanth and Prednisone

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ORAL DRUGS

Why this applies to Prednisone

Prednisone falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Tragacanth interacts with.

Theoretically, tragacanth might alter absorption of oral drugs.
Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with prednisone and tragacanth. Tragacanth is basically a gel-forming fiber. When it swells up in your stomach and gut, it can grab onto pills sitting nearby and slow down or change how much of the medicine your body actually absorbs. With prednisone, the worry is that less of your dose could get into your bloodstream, which might mean you don't get the full anti-inflammatory benefit you're counting on for things like arthritis flares, allergic reactions, or breathing issues.

I want to be honest: this is a theoretical concern based on how the fiber behaves, not something proven to happen with prednisone specifically. To stay on the safe side, a simple fix is spacing them out. Take your prednisone first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before the tragacanth. If you have questions, your pharmacist is happy to help.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Prednisone page

“Prednisone (Deltasone) suppresses the immune system to control inflammation, and that mechanism shapes most of what can go wrong on this 208-ingredient list, which I read as one to approach carefully rather than casually. Four entries rate major.”

Tragacanth is a plant gum used mainly as a thickener and emulsifier in foods, cosmetics, and medicines, and traditionally to soothe the throat and gut. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but anyone with allergies or who is pregnant or breastfeeding should check with a pharmacist or doctor first.
