Tragacanth and Diclofenac Sodium

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ORAL DRUGS

Why this applies to Diclofenac Sodium

Diclofenac Sodium falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Tragacanth interacts with.

Theoretically, tragacanth might alter absorption of oral drugs.
Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with tragacanth and diclofenac. Tragacanth is a plant gum that swells into a thick, slippery gel when it meets fluid in your stomach. Because of that, it could in theory grab onto your diclofenac tablet and slow down or change how much gets absorbed. The result could go either way: a bit less pain and arthritis relief if absorption drops, or potentially more if it nudges levels up.

I want to be honest, though, this is a theoretical concern based on how the gum behaves, not something proven in people taking diclofenac. To stay on the safe side, take any tragacanth supplement 30 to 60 minutes after your diclofenac. Food amounts (like a thickener in a product) are unlikely to matter. If you're unsure, your pharmacist can help you sort out the timing.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Diclofenac Sodium page

“Diclofenac (Voltaren), a daily mainstay for arthritis and joint pain, comes with a supplement list that calls for real vigilance. Of the 308 ingredients on file, 7 rate major, and roughly two hundred entries share a single theme: anything with blood-thinning activity adds to diclofenac's own bleeding risk, especially in the stomach.”
