Why this applies to Nifedipine

Nifedipine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Atractylodes interacts with.

Theoretically, atractylodes might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
In animals, atractylodes administered at high doses has been shown to inhibit CYP3A1 activity, which is a homolog to the human CYP3A4 enzyme. This effect has not been shown in humans.

Here's the gist with these two together. Your body clears nifedipine using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In animal studies, high doses of atractylodes seemed to slow a similar enzyme down. If that were to happen in people, your nifedipine could build up a bit, which might mean stronger effects like dizziness, flushing, headache, swollen ankles, or blood pressure dropping lower than you'd want.

The important part: this is theoretical and only seen in lab and animal work, never confirmed in humans, and it's rated as a minor interaction. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, since concentrated supplement doses differ from a little in food, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding it.

What Is Nifedipine Used For?

Brand names: Procardia XL, Adalat PA, Adalat, Nifedin, Nifed PA, Nifed, Procardia, Adalat XL, Adalat CC, Adalat LA, Adalat Retard, Adipine MR, Adipine XL, Cardilate MR, Coracten SR, Coracten XL, Fortipine LA 40, Hypolar Retard 20, Nifedipress MR, Nifopress Retard, Tensipine MR

Nifedipine treats high blood pressure (hypertension), chronic stable angina (chest pain brought on by physical effort), and vasospastic angina (chest pain caused by spasm of the coronary arteries, sometimes called Prinzmetal's angina). Lowering blood pressure with nifedipine helps reduce the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

The capsule form is approved for vasospastic angina and chronic stable angina only — it is not approved for high blood pressure. The extended-release tablet (including Procardia) covers all three uses: vasospastic angina, chronic stable angina, and high blood pressure.
