Why this applies to Diazepam

Diazepam falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Atractylodes interacts with.

Theoretically, atractylodes might decrease the levels of CYP1A2 substrates.
In animals, atractylodes administered at high doses has been shown to induce CYP1A2 activity. This effect has not been shown in humans.

Here's the gist for diazepam (Valium). There's a theory that atractylodes could speed up an enzyme in your liver called CYP1A2, which is one of the helpers that breaks diazepam down. If that enzyme works faster, your body could clear diazepam a bit quicker, which in plain terms might mean it works a little less well, so you could see weaker calming, anxiety relief, or muscle relaxation.

Now, the honest part: this is only seen in animals given high doses, and never proven in people. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Diazepam isn't a prodrug, so it doesn't flip the other way. Still, before you add atractylodes, check with your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on how your diazepam is working.

Diazepam also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, atractylodes might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
In animals, atractylodes administered at high doses has been shown to inhibit CYP3A1 activity, which is a homolog to the human CYP3A4 enzyme. This effect has not been shown in humans.

Your body clears diazepam (Valium) partly through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. The thinking here is that atractylodes might slow that enzyme down a little. If that happened, diazepam could hang around longer and build up, which could make its effects stronger. With Valium that usually means more drowsiness, grogginess, dizziness, or feeling unsteady on your feet.

Here's the reassuring part: this is only a theoretical concern. It comes from animal and lab studies using high doses, and it has never actually been shown in people. So for most folks this is a low-level, watch-and-see situation. Still, since diazepam already makes you sleepy, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding atractylodes.

Atractylodes is a root used for centuries in traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Thai medicine, mostly for digestive complaints and fatigue, often as part of multi-herb formulas. Modern research is still early and mostly from lab and animal studies, so its true benefits in people are not well proven. What Is Diazepam Used For?

Brand names: Valium, Valium injection, Diastat AcuDial, Valtoco

  • Diazepam is used to relieve anxiety and to control agitation caused by alcohol withdrawal. It is also used along with other medications to control muscle spasms and spasticity caused by certain neurological disorders such as cerebral palsy (condition that causes difficulty with movement and balance), paraplegia (inability to move parts of the body), athetosis (abnormal muscle contractions), and stiff-man syndrome (a rare disorder with muscle rigidity and stiffness). Diazepam is also used along with other medications to control seizures. Diazepam is in a class of medications called benzodiazepines. It works by calming abnormal overactivity in the brain.
