Why this applies to Nicardipine

Nicardipine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Atractylodes interacts with.

Theoretically, atractylodes might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
In animals, atractylodes administered at high doses has been shown to inhibit CYP3A1 activity, which is a homolog to the human CYP3A4 enzyme. This effect has not been shown in humans.

Here's the short version on pairing atractylodes with nicardipine. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear nicardipine out of your system. In lab dishes and animal studies, atractylodes has slowed down a similar enzyme. If that were to happen in people, more nicardipine could hang around, which in theory might nudge its blood-pressure-lowering effect a bit too far. That could show up as dizziness, lightheadedness, flushing, headache, swelling in the ankles, or a faster heartbeat.

That said, this is only a theoretical, low-strength concern that has never been shown in humans, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, since nicardipine controls your blood pressure and chest pain, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding this supplement.

What Is Nicardipine Used For?

Brand names: Cardene, Cardene SR, Cardene IV

Nicardipine Hydrochloride capsules are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and chronic stable angina (chest pain that comes on with physical effort). The capsules can be used alone or combined with other blood pressure or heart medications.

Intravenous (IV) nicardipine products — including Cardene I.V., Nicardipine Hydrochloride Injection, and Nicardipine Hydrochloride in Sodium Chloride — are used for the short-term treatment of high blood pressure in hospital settings when a patient cannot take oral medication. Once stable, patients are switched to oral therapy.
