Why this applies to Omeprazole

Omeprazole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Atractylodes interacts with.

Theoretically, atractylodes might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
In animals, atractylodes administered at high doses has been shown to inhibit CYP3A1 activity, which is a homolog to the human CYP3A4 enzyme. This effect has not been shown in humans.

Here's the short version: your body partly clears omeprazole using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 (the main one is actually CYP2C19, but 3A4 helps too). In animal studies, high doses of atractylodes slowed down a similar enzyme. If that happened in people, omeprazole could clear a bit more slowly and build up slightly, which in theory might mean a little more of its usual effects, like headache, stomach upset, gas, or diarrhea.

The honest part is that this is theoretical. It has only been seen in lab and animal work, never confirmed in humans, and it's rated a minor interaction. Omeprazole is also generally well tolerated and not a narrow-margin drug, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, if you plan to take concentrated atractylodes supplements regularly, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Omeprazole

What Is Omeprazole Used For?

Brand names: Prilosec, Zegerid, Losec

Omeprazole is used to treat a range of conditions where stomach acid causes problems. These include heartburn and acid reflux (GERD), erosive esophagitis (damage to the esophagus from acid), and stomach or duodenal ulcers. It can also be used alongside antibiotics to help get rid of an H. pylori infection — a bacteria that causes ulcers.

In more serious cases, omeprazole is used to manage conditions where the stomach produces far too much acid, such as pathologic hypersecretory conditions (rare medical disorders that cause extreme acid overproduction). It is approved for adults and children one year of age and older for GERD and erosive esophagitis.
