Omeprazole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Evening Primrose interacts with.

Theoretically, evening primrose may increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP2C9 substrates.

Here's the short version: this is a very minor, mostly theoretical concern. In lab studies, a component of evening primrose oil (linoleic acid) appears to slow down an enzyme called CYP2C9, which helps your body break down omeprazole. If that enzyme works a little slower, omeprazole could linger a bit longer than usual.

Practically speaking, omeprazole isn't a prodrug, so a small slowdown would just mean slightly stronger or longer acid-lowering effects. The most you might notice is mild stuff like headache, nausea, gas, or loose stools. This is based only on test-tube data, not real patients, so it's unlikely to cause trouble for most people. Still, if you plan to take both regularly, it's worth a quick check with your pharmacist or doctor.

Evening primrose oil is a seed oil rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an omega-6 fatty acid, that is popularly used for skin conditions, PMS, and breast pain. The evidence behind most of these uses is mixed or weak, and it is not proven to be a reliable treatment for any condition. It is generally well tolerated for short-term use, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before starting it, especially if you are pregnant or have a bleeding disorder.

What Is Omeprazole Used For?

Brand names: Prilosec, Zegerid, Losec

Omeprazole is used to treat a range of conditions where stomach acid causes problems. These include heartburn and acid reflux (GERD), erosive esophagitis (damage to the esophagus from acid), and stomach or duodenal ulcers. It can also be used alongside antibiotics to help get rid of an H. pylori infection — a bacteria that causes ulcers.

In more serious cases, omeprazole is used to manage conditions where the stomach produces far too much acid, such as pathologic hypersecretory conditions (rare medical disorders that cause extreme acid overproduction). It is approved for adults and children one year of age and older for GERD and erosive esophagitis.
