Theoretically, evening primrose may increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP2C9 substrates.
In vitro research shows that linoleic acid, a constituent of evening primrose oil, inhibits CYP2C9.

Here's the gist for Viagra (sildenafil) and evening primrose oil. Your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP2C9 to help clear sildenafil. In lab dish studies, a fatty acid in evening primrose oil seems to mildly slow that enzyme down. In theory, that could let a little more sildenafil hang around, which might nudge up its usual effects, like headache, flushing, a stuffy nose, or lightheadedness.

That said, this is a minor concern built on test-tube data, not real patient cases. Sildenafil is not a prodrug, so the direction is a slight increase, not a loss of effect. For most people taking it occasionally, this isn't a big deal. Still, if you plan to use both regularly, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor.

Evening primrose oil is a seed oil rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an omega-6 fatty acid, that is popularly used for skin conditions, PMS, and breast pain. The evidence behind most of these uses is mixed or weak, and it is not proven to be a reliable treatment for any condition. It is generally well tolerated for short-term use, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before starting it, especially if you are pregnant or have a bleeding disorder.

What Is Sildenafil Used For?

Brand name: Viagra

Sildenafil tablets, oral suspension, and injection are used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) — high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs — in adults to improve exercise ability and slow disease progression. Revatio (tablets, oral suspension, and injection) and sildenafil oral suspension are also approved for PAH in children aged 1 to 17 years.

Viagra (tablet) and Vybrique (dissolving oral film) are specifically indicated for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED). Not every formulation of sildenafil is approved for both conditions — your prescriber will choose the right product for your situation.
