Voriconazole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Evening Primrose interacts with.

Theoretically, evening primrose may increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP2C9 substrates.
In vitro research shows that linoleic acid, a constituent of evening primrose oil, inhibits CYP2C9.

Here's the gist: your body uses several liver enzymes, including one called CYP2C9, to clear voriconazole out of your system. In lab dish studies, a fatty acid found in evening primrose oil (linoleic acid) appeared to slow that enzyme down. If that happened in real life, voriconazole could build up a bit higher than usual, which might mean more of its known side effects, like nausea, visual changes (blurry vision or seeing brighter light), headache, or liver enzyme bumps.

The honest truth is this is theoretical, based only on test-tube data, and it's rated minor. For most people taking evening primrose, it's unlikely to cause real trouble. Still, voriconazole is a powerful antifungal with tricky blood levels, so I'd run it past your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Evening primrose oil is a seed oil rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an omega-6 fatty acid, that is popularly used for skin conditions, PMS, and breast pain. The evidence behind most of these uses is mixed or weak, and it is not proven to be a reliable treatment for any condition. It is generally well tolerated for short-term use, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before starting it, especially if you are pregnant or have a bleeding disorder.

About Voriconazole

What Is Voriconazole Used For?

Brand name: Vfend

Voriconazole treats several serious fungal infections. Across all available forms — tablets, oral suspension, and intravenous (IV) injection — it is used for invasive aspergillosis (a dangerous mold infection), candidemia (Candida fungus in the bloodstream) in patients who are not neutropenic (not severely low on white blood cells), other deep-tissue Candida infections, and serious infections caused by Scedosporium apiospermum or Fusarium species in patients who cannot tolerate or have not responded to other antifungal treatments.

Esophageal candidiasis (a Candida infection of the esophagus, the swallowing tube) is also an approved use for most formulations. Note on the oral tablet form (generic voriconazole tablets): that specific tablet formulation is approved for patients aged 12 to 14 years weighing at least 50 kg, and all patients 15 years and older — not for younger or smaller children. The oral suspension and the IV injection are approved for patients 2 years and older for most of these conditions.
