Rabeprazole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Evening Primrose interacts with.

Theoretically, evening primrose may increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP2C9 substrates.
In vitro research shows that linoleic acid, a constituent of evening primrose oil, inhibits CYP2C9.

Here's the gist with rabeprazole and evening primrose oil. In a lab dish, a fatty acid in the oil mildly blocks an enzyme called CYP2C9, which helps your body clear certain medicines. The thinking is that if that enzyme is slowed, a little more rabeprazole could hang around than usual. In real life, rabeprazole leans mostly on a different enzyme (CYP2C19) and is broken down in several ways, so this concern is pretty small and is only theoretical, not something proven in people.

Even if levels nudged up a touch, rabeprazole is generally well tolerated, with mild things like headache, nausea, or stomach upset being the most likely. I wouldn't lose sleep over this combo, but it's always smart to run your full supplement list past your pharmacist or doctor.

Evening primrose oil is a seed oil rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an omega-6 fatty acid, that is popularly used for skin conditions, PMS, and breast pain. The evidence behind most of these uses is mixed or weak, and it is not proven to be a reliable treatment for any condition. It is generally well tolerated for short-term use, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before starting it, especially if you are pregnant or have a bleeding disorder.

What Is Rabeprazole Used For?

Rabeprazole delayed-release tablets treat a range of acid-related conditions in adults, including healing and maintenance of erosive or ulcerative GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), symptomatic GERD, duodenal ulcers, and pathological hypersecretory conditions such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. They are also used alongside antibiotics (amoxicillin and clarithromycin) to eradicate H. pylori bacteria and reduce the risk of duodenal ulcer coming back.

In adolescents 12 years and older, rabeprazole delayed-release tablets are approved for short-term treatment of symptomatic GERD. Both AcipHex and Rabeprazole Sodium delayed-release tablets share this indication set for adults and adolescents 12 and older.
