Diazepam falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Evening Primrose interacts with.

Theoretically, evening primrose may increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP2C9 substrates.
In vitro research shows that linoleic acid, a constituent of evening primrose oil, inhibits CYP2C9.

Here's the gist: your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP2C9 (along with a couple of others) to help break down diazepam. Lab studies suggest a fatty acid in evening primrose oil can slow that enzyme down a bit. In theory, that means diazepam might clear a little slower and hang around longer, which could nudge up its calming effects, things like extra drowsiness, grogginess, or feeling unsteady on your feet.

The good news is this is a minor, theoretical concern based only on test-tube data, not on real patients, so for most people it's unlikely to cause trouble. Still, if you notice more sleepiness than usual or you take diazepam regularly, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing the two.

Evening primrose oil is a seed oil rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an omega-6 fatty acid, that is popularly used for skin conditions, PMS, and breast pain. The evidence behind most of these uses is mixed or weak, and it is not proven to be a reliable treatment for any condition. It is generally well tolerated for short-term use, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before starting it, especially if you are pregnant or have a bleeding disorder.

What Is Diazepam Used For?

  • Diazepam is used to relieve anxiety and to control agitation caused by alcohol withdrawal. It is also used along with other medications to control muscle spasms and spasticity caused by certain neurological disorders such as cerebral palsy (condition that causes difficulty with movement and balance), paraplegia (inability to move parts of the body), athetosis (abnormal muscle contractions), and stiff-man syndrome (a rare disorder with muscle rigidity and stiffness). Diazepam is also used along with other medications to control seizures. Diazepam is in a class of medications called benzodiazepines. It works by calming abnormal overactivity in the brain.
