Here's the simple version: Diazepam (Valium) already slows down activity in your brain to ease anxiety, relax muscles, or calm seizures. Motherwort is thought to have its own mild calming, sedating effect. Put the two together and those effects can stack, so you might feel extra drowsy, foggy, lightheaded, or unsteady on your feet. This isn't about motherwort changing how your body breaks down diazepam, it's just two sedating things layered on top of each other.

Keep in mind this warning is theoretical, based on how these substances behave rather than strong human studies, so it may not be dramatic for everyone. Still, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially if you drive or already feel sleepy on diazepam.

What Is Diazepam Used For?

Brand names: Valium, Valium injection, Diastat AcuDial, Valtoco

  • Diazepam is used to relieve anxiety and to control agitation caused by alcohol withdrawal. It is also used along with other medications to control muscle spasms and spasticity caused by certain neurological disorders such as cerebral palsy (condition that causes difficulty with movement and balance), paraplegia (inability to move parts of the body), athetosis (abnormal muscle contractions), and stiff-man syndrome (a rare disorder with muscle rigidity and stiffness). Diazepam is also used along with other medications to control seizures. Diazepam is in a class of medications called benzodiazepines. It works by calming abnormal overactivity in the brain.
