Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: buprenorphine (Belbuca) already calms the nervous system, which is how it eases severe pain. Motherwort has been reported to have its own mild calming, sedating effect. Put the two together and those effects could stack up, so you might feel extra drowsy, dizzy, foggy, or short of breath. This isn't about motherwort changing how your body breaks the drug down, it's just two sedating things adding up.

I want to be honest that this concern is theoretical, based on how each one behaves rather than strong human studies. Still, because buprenorphine is a serious pain medicine, I'd run it by your pharmacist or doctor before adding motherwort, and never start or stop anything on your own.
