Diazepam falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Jambolan interacts with.

There is some in vitro evidence that jambolan can inhibit CYP2C9. Theoretically, concomitant use of jambolan with CYP2C9 substrates may increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.

Here's the gist for Valium (diazepam): lab tests suggest jambolan may block a liver enzyme called CYP2C9, which is one of the enzymes that helps clear diazepam from your body. If that enzyme slows down, diazepam could build up a bit more than usual. In practical terms, that might mean stronger sedation, more drowsiness, dizziness, or feeling foggy and unsteady on your feet.

That said, this is only a theoretical concern based on test-tube research, not real people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Eating the fruit as food is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated jambolan supplements are the bigger question mark. Before adding one, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor, especially if diazepam already makes you sleepy.

What Is Diazepam Used For?

  • Diazepam is used to relieve anxiety and to control agitation caused by alcohol withdrawal. It is also used along with other medications to control muscle spasms and spasticity caused by certain neurological disorders such as cerebral palsy (condition that causes difficulty with movement and balance), paraplegia (inability to move parts of the body), athetosis (abnormal muscle contractions), and stiff-man syndrome (a rare disorder with muscle rigidity and stiffness). Diazepam is also used along with other medications to control seizures. Diazepam is in a class of medications called benzodiazepines. It works by calming abnormal overactivity in the brain.
