Lacosamide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Jambolan interacts with.

There is some in vitro evidence that jambolan can inhibit CYP2C9. Theoretically, concomitant use of jambolan with CYP2C9 substrates may increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.

Here's the gist with Jambolan and Lacosamide (Vimpat): your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP2C9 as one of the routes to clear lacosamide out. Lab studies suggest jambolan might slow that enzyme down a bit. In theory, if it does, lacosamide could build up a little higher than usual, which could mean more of its typical side effects like dizziness, drowsiness, blurred or double vision, or feeling unsteady on your feet.

I want to be honest though, this is only seen in test-tube research, not in real people, so it's more of a maybe than a sure thing. Eating the fruit is unlikely to matter much; concentrated supplements are the bigger question mark. Before adding a jambolan supplement, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Jambolan (Syzygium cumini), also called Java plum or black plum, is a tropical fruit tree traditionally used for blood sugar and digestive complaints. Human evidence for these uses is limited and not strong, so it should not replace proven treatments like diabetes medication. The fruit is safe as food, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated supplements.

About Lacosamide

What Is Lacosamide Used For?

Brand names: Vimpat, Motpoly XR

Lacosamide is used to treat partial-onset seizures (seizures that start in one part of the brain) in adults and children. The age at which it is approved depends on the specific product: Vimpat tablets, oral solution, and injection are approved for partial-onset seizures in patients as young as 1 month old; most other formulations are approved from age 4 and up; and Motpoly XR is approved for patients weighing at least 50 kg.

Lacosamide is also used as adjunctive (add-on) therapy for primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures (grand mal seizures involving the whole brain) in adults and children 4 years of age and older, including Motpoly XR for patients weighing at least 50 kg.
