Zileuton falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Evening Primrose interacts with.

Theoretically, evening primrose may increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP2C9 substrates.
In vitro research shows that linoleic acid, a constituent of evening primrose oil, inhibits CYP2C9.

Here's the gist for combining evening primrose oil with Zileuton. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP2C9 to help clear zileuton from your body. In lab (test tube) studies, a fatty acid in evening primrose oil seems to slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happened in real life, zileuton could build up slightly and lead to a touch more of its usual side effects, like nausea, stomach upset, headache, or changes in liver enzyme blood tests.

I want to be honest with you though: this is purely theoretical, based on pharmacology, not on real patient reports, and it's rated as minor. So it's not something to panic about. Since zileuton already calls for liver monitoring, just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up before adding the supplement so they can keep an eye on things.

Evening primrose oil is a seed oil rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an omega-6 fatty acid, that is popularly used for skin conditions, PMS, and breast pain. The evidence behind most of these uses is mixed or weak, and it is not proven to be a reliable treatment for any condition. It is generally well tolerated for short-term use, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before starting it, especially if you are pregnant or have a bleeding disorder.

What Is Zileuton Used For?

Brand names: Zyflo, Zyflo CR

Zileuton is used for the ongoing prevention and treatment of asthma in adults and adolescents aged 12 and older. It is a maintenance medicine — meaning it is taken regularly to keep asthma under control, not to stop an asthma attack once it has started.

Zyflo (the tablet form) and zileuton extended-release tablets are both approved for this same purpose. Neither form should be used to treat a sudden asthma attack. However, both can be continued during a flare-up of asthma while you also use your rescue inhaler.
