Siberian cocklebur can adversely affect the liver. It has been linked to many cases of hepatotoxicity and some cases of liver failure. Theoretically, concomitant use with other potentially hepatotoxic drugs might increase the risk of developing liver damage. Some of these drugs include acarbose (Precose, Prandase), amiodarone (Cordarone), atorvastatin (Lipitor), azathioprine (Imuran), carbamazepine (Tegretol), cerivastatin (Baycol), diclofenac (Voltaren), felbamate (Felbatol), fenofibrate (TriCor), fluvastatin (Lescol), gemfibrozil (Lopid), isoniazid, itraconazole, (Sporanox), ketoconazole (Nizoral), leflunomide (Arava), lovastatin (Mevacor), methotrexate (Rheumatrex), nevirapine (Viramune), niacin, nitrofurantoin (Macrodantin), pioglitazone (Actos), pravastatin (Pravachol), pyrazinamide, rifampin (Rifadin), ritonavir (Norvir), rosiglitazone (Avandia), simvastatin (Zocor), tacrine (Cognex), tamoxifen, terbinafine (Lamisil), valproic acid, and zileuton (Zyflo).

Here's the concern with pairing Siberian cocklebur and zileuton (Zyflo): both can be hard on your liver. Zileuton is already one of those asthma medications that doctors monitor with regular liver blood tests, because on its own it can raise liver enzymes and, in rare cases, cause real liver injury. Siberian cocklebur has been tied to many cases of liver damage and even some liver failure, so stacking the two together could add up.

This isn't about zileuton working better or worse. It's about doubling up two things that stress the same organ. Watch for warning signs like yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, nausea, belly pain, or unusual tiredness. Please talk with your pharmacist or doctor before combining these.

About Zileuton

What Is Zileuton Used For?

Brand names: Zyflo, Zyflo CR

Zileuton is used for the ongoing prevention and treatment of asthma in adults and adolescents aged 12 and older. It is a maintenance medicine — meaning it is taken regularly to keep asthma under control, not to stop an asthma attack once it has started.

Zyflo (the tablet form) and zileuton extended-release tablets are both approved for this same purpose. Neither form should be used to treat a sudden asthma attack. However, both can be continued during a flare-up of asthma while you also use your rescue inhaler.
