Valsartan falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Evening Primrose interacts with.

Theoretically, evening primrose may increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP2C9 substrates.
In vitro research shows that linoleic acid, a constituent of evening primrose oil, inhibits CYP2C9.

Here's the gist with valsartan (Diovan) and evening primrose oil. In a test tube, a fatty acid in the oil appears to slow down an enzyme called CYP2C9, which is one pathway your body uses to clear valsartan. In theory, slowing that pathway could let a bit more valsartan linger, nudging its blood-pressure-lowering effect slightly stronger. That might mean a touch more dizziness, lightheadedness, or feeling tired, especially when you stand up quickly.

I want to be honest, though: this is a theoretical concern based only on lab data, and it's rated minor. Most people won't notice anything. Still, if you're starting evening primrose, it's a good idea to mention it to your pharmacist or doctor and keep an eye on your blood pressure readings.

Evening primrose oil is a seed oil rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an omega-6 fatty acid, that is popularly used for skin conditions, PMS, and breast pain. The evidence behind most of these uses is mixed or weak, and it is not proven to be a reliable treatment for any condition. It is generally well tolerated for short-term use, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before starting it, especially if you are pregnant or have a bleeding disorder.

What Is Valsartan Used For?

Brand names: Diovan, Prexxartan

Valsartan treats high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children, heart failure in adults, and reduces the risk of cardiovascular death in adults who have had a heart attack and have a weakened heart muscle. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of stroke and heart attack.

Diovan (valsartan) tablets are approved to treat high blood pressure in children as young as 1 year old. Valsartan tablets (other brands) are approved for children 6 years and older. Valsartan oral solution is specifically indicated for patients with heart failure or post-heart attack left ventricular dysfunction who are unable to swallow tablets.
