Voriconazole is already one of the harder antifungals on your liver. It's processed by the liver, and even on its own it can bump up liver enzymes or, less often, cause real liver injury. That's why your doctor may check bloodwork while you're on it.

Adding beer puts extra strain on the same organ. Drinking, especially heavier amounts, raises the odds of liver trouble (think yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, nausea, or unusual tiredness). The two together simply give your liver more to handle. An occasional sip is different from regular or heavy drinking, but while you're fighting a serious fungal infection, the safest move is to skip alcohol. Beer is an alcoholic beverage that contains some minerals, B vitamins, and plant compounds from hops and grain, but it is not a health supplement. Any possible benefits come only from light-to-moderate intake, and they are easily outweighed by the well-known harms of alcohol. The safest amount of alcohol for health is none, and beer should be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding.

About Voriconazole

What Is Voriconazole Used For?

Brand name: Vfend

Voriconazole treats several serious fungal infections. Across all available forms — tablets, oral suspension, and intravenous (IV) injection — it is used for invasive aspergillosis (a dangerous mold infection), candidemia (Candida fungus in the bloodstream) in patients who are not neutropenic (not severely low on white blood cells), other deep-tissue Candida infections, and serious infections caused by Scedosporium apiospermum or Fusarium species in patients who cannot tolerate or have not responded to other antifungal treatments.

Esophageal candidiasis (a Candida infection of the esophagus, the swallowing tube) is also an approved use for most formulations. Note on the oral tablet form (generic voriconazole tablets): that specific tablet formulation is approved for patients aged 12 to 14 years weighing at least 50 kg, and all patients 15 years and older — not for younger or smaller children. The oral suspension and the IV injection are approved for patients 2 years and older for most of these conditions.
