Atractylodes and Naproxen, Sumatriptan

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Atractylodes interacts with whole categories of medication. Naproxen, Sumatriptan falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Atractylodes in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Naproxen, Sumatriptan

Naproxen, Sumatriptan falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Atractylodes interacts with.

Theoretically, atractylodes might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs.
Laboratory research suggests that atractylenolides II and III, constituents of atractylodes, reduce platelet activation. So far, this has not been shown in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Treximet combines naproxen (an anti-inflammatory pain reliever) with sumatriptan (a migraine medicine). Here, the part that matters is the naproxen. Like other NSAIDs, naproxen can already thin the blood a little and irritate the stomach lining, which is why it can sometimes cause bruising, stomach upset, or, less often, bleeding.

The concern with atractylodes is that, in lab and animal studies, two of its compounds appeared to make platelets a bit less sticky. Stacked on top of naproxen, that could in theory nudge your bleeding risk higher. I want to be honest though: this has not been shown in people, so it's a theoretical worry. Still, if you notice easy bruising, dark stools, or stomach pain, check in with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

2 of 2

Naproxen, Sumatriptan also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, atractylodes might decrease the levels of CYP1A2 substrates.
In animals, atractylodes administered at high doses has been shown to induce CYP1A2 activity. This effect has not been shown in humans.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Treximet combines two active medicines, naproxen (an anti-inflammatory pain reliever) and sumatriptan (a migraine medicine). Neither one is a prodrug, so they don't need to be switched on by your body to work. The concern on file is that atractylodes might speed up a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, which could in theory clear these drugs out a bit faster. If that happened, you might notice your migraine relief feels weaker or doesn't last as long.

Honestly, I wouldn't lose sleep over this one. This effect only showed up in animals given high doses, never in people, and it's rated minor. Still, if you take Treximet and want to try atractylodes, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Atractylodes

What is Atractylodes?

Atractylodes
  • Digestive upset and poor appetite
  • Bloating and fluid retention
  • General fatigue or 'weakness'
  • Diarrhea
  • Support within traditional formulas

Atractylodes is a root used for centuries in traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Thai medicine, mostly for digestive complaints and fatigue, often as part of multi-herb formulas. Modern research is still early and mostly from lab and animal studies, so its true benefits in people are not well proven. If you want to try it, talk with a pharmacist or doctor first, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
