Here's the simple idea: omeprazole works by shutting down the pumps in your stomach that make acid, which calms heartburn and helps your esophagus heal. Calumba is a bitter herb traditionally used to do almost the opposite, gently nudging your stomach to make more acid and digestive juices. So in theory, taking calumba could work against what omeprazole is trying to accomplish and leave you with a bit more burning or reflux.

That said, this is very weak, anecdotal evidence, not solid proof, and it's rated a minor interaction. If you ever feel your omeprazole isn't holding your symptoms in check, don't stop or change anything on your own. Just check in with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Modern scientific evidence for these uses is very limited, and its safety has not been well studied, so it should be used cautiously and avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

About Omeprazole

What Is Omeprazole Used For?

Brand names: Prilosec, Zegerid, Losec

Omeprazole is used to treat a range of conditions where stomach acid causes problems. These include heartburn and acid reflux (GERD), erosive esophagitis (damage to the esophagus from acid), and stomach or duodenal ulcers. It can also be used alongside antibiotics to help get rid of an H. pylori infection — a bacteria that causes ulcers.

In more serious cases, omeprazole is used to manage conditions where the stomach produces far too much acid, such as pathologic hypersecretory conditions (rare medical disorders that cause extreme acid overproduction). It is approved for adults and children one year of age and older for GERD and erosive esophagitis.
