Estrogen falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Atractylodes interacts with.

Theoretically, atractylodes might decrease the levels of CYP1A2 substrates.
In animals, atractylodes administered at high doses has been shown to induce CYP1A2 activity. This effect has not been shown in humans.

Here's the gist for combining atractylodes with your estrogen. Your body partly clears estrogen using a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. In animal studies (using high doses), atractylodes seemed to speed that enzyme up. If the same happened in people, it could clear estrogen a little faster and possibly make it work a bit less well, meaning symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, or vaginal dryness might creep back.

I want to be honest, though: this is only a theoretical concern based on lab and animal data, never confirmed in humans, and it's rated as minor. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, if you plan to take atractylodes regularly, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.

Estrogen also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, atractylodes might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
In animals, atractylodes administered at high doses has been shown to inhibit CYP3A1 activity, which is a homolog to the human CYP3A4 enzyme. This effect has not been shown in humans.

Here's the simple version: your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down estrogen and clear it out. In animal studies, high doses of atractylodes seemed to slow a similar enzyme down. If that same thing happened in people, your estrogen could clear a little more slowly and build up slightly, which in theory might nudge up estrogen-related effects like breast tenderness, bloating, nausea, or spotting.

I want to keep this in perspective. This is a theoretical concern based only on lab and animal work, not on real human cases, and it's rated as a minor interaction. Estrogen is not a prodrug, so it isn't weakened here. If you take both, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor and watch for any new symptoms.
