Here's the gist for anyone taking Fruquintinib (Fruzaqla) for colorectal cancer. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break this medication down. Lab studies (in test tubes, not people) hint that American elder may slow that enzyme. If that happened in the body, more Fruquintinib could linger in your system, which might mean stronger side effects like high blood pressure, mouth sores, hand-foot skin reactions, fatigue, or bleeding.

I want to be honest though: this is theoretical and based only on early lab work, so we really don't know if it matters in real life. Because cancer drugs like this leave little room for error, I'd still run it by your oncologist or pharmacist before adding elderberry products.

American elder is a North American plant whose cooked, ripe berries and flowers are used mainly for colds, flu, and general immune support. The science behind these uses is limited and most studies focus on the closely related European black elder (Sambucus nigra), so benefits are uncertain. Only properly prepared berries and flowers should be used, since raw berries, leaves, bark, and seeds can cause poisoning.

What Is Fruquintinib Used For?

Brand name: Fruzaqla

Fruzaqla (fruquintinib) is used to treat adults with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) — colorectal cancer that has spread to other parts of the body. It is specifically for patients who have already been treated with several standard chemotherapy regimens and other targeted therapies.

Fruzaqla is intended for patients who have previously received fluoropyrimidine-, oxaliplatin-, and irinotecan-based chemotherapy, an anti-VEGF therapy, and — if their tumor is RAS wild-type and it is medically appropriate — an anti-EGFR therapy.
