Here's the gist: your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear Camzyos (mavacamten) out of your system. Lab studies hint that elderberry might slow that same enzyme down. If that happened in a real person, mavacamten could build up and hit harder than intended.

Why that matters here: mavacamten works by easing how forcefully your heart squeezes, so too much can drop that function too far. That can show up as shortness of breath, dizziness, swelling, or fatigue, and it's monitored with regular echocardiograms. This is a careful, closely dosed drug, so even small shifts deserve attention. That said, this warning comes only from test-tube research, not people, so it's far from proven. Please loop in your cardiologist or pharmacist before adding any elderberry product.

“Grapefruit is the first thing I would set aside for anyone taking mavacamten (Camzyos), the medicine for obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. It blocks CYP3A4, the liver enzyme that clears mavacamten, and too much of this drug can weaken the heart's pumping strength, the very problem careful dosing exists to prevent.”

American elder is a North American plant whose cooked, ripe berries and flowers are used mainly for colds, flu, and general immune support. The science behind these uses is limited and most studies focus on the closely related European black elder (Sambucus nigra), so benefits are uncertain. What Is Mavacamten Used For?

Brand name: Camzyos

Camzyos (mavacamten) is approved for adults with symptomatic obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) — a condition where the heart muscle grows too thick and blocks blood flow out of the heart. Specifically, it is used in people whose symptoms fall into New York Heart Association (NYHA) class II or III, meaning they have noticeable limitations on physical activity.

The goal of treatment is to improve how much the patient can do physically and to reduce the symptoms that HCM causes, such as shortness of breath, chest pain, and fatigue.
