Androstenedione and Effient

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Effient and Androstenedione in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Effient

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Effient is filed under 7 classifications — including cytochrome p450 2b6 (cyp2b6) substrates, cytochrome p450 2c19 (cyp2c19) substrates, cytochrome p450 2c9 (cyp2c9) substrates. Androstenedione has documented interactions with 1 drug class — the most serious being estrogens (moderate) — and none of Effient’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What Androstenedione Itself Has Been Linked To

This is not an interaction — nothing below involves Effient. It is the side-effect record for Androstenedione on its own, from the licensed Natural Medicines monograph. Everything above comes from the Natural Medicines adverse-effect record for Androstenedione — expand a row for the licensed statement it rests on. We read the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of Effient’s FDA label too, and the two lists don’t meaningfully overlap — which is why no Effient column appears here.

See Every Supplement That Interacts With Effient

This page covers Androstenedione only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Effient page lists 295 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Danshen (major), Grapefruit (major), Piracetam (major) and St. John's Wort (major).

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Effient page

“Effient (prasugrel) keeps platelets from forming clots, usually after a stent or a heart attack, and I would not pair supplements with it casually. Roughly 200 ingredients on this list can thin the blood further and raise bleeding risk, including two of the five rated major.”

About Androstenedione

What is Androstenedione?

Androstenedione
  • Muscle building
  • Athletic performance
  • Boosting testosterone
  • Anti-aging
  • Increasing libido

Androstenedione is a prohormone that the body can convert into testosterone and estrogen, but studies have not shown that taking it reliably builds muscle or improves athletic performance. It carries real risks, is a controlled substance in the United States, and is banned in nearly all sports, so most people should avoid it.

Not a plant; a hormone precursor made synthetically or in the body · Capsules, tablets, sublingual sprays, powders (where legally available)

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Androstenedione is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Androstenedione record says about it on its own.

Androstenedione: dosing

There is no established safe or effective dose for androstenedione. Past products varied widely, and because it is now a controlled substance, it is not appropriate to recommend any amount. If you encounter a product containing it, do not assume the label dose is safe or accurate. The safest choice is to avoid it.

About Prasugrel

What Is Prasugrel Used For?

Brand name: Prasugrel

Prasugrel tablets (brand names Effient and Prasugrel) are used to lower the risk of dangerous blood clots — including clots that can block a stent — in people with acute coronary syndrome (ACS), which includes unstable angina (chest pain at rest) and heart attacks (both NSTEMI and STEMI types). It is used specifically in patients who are being treated with a procedure called percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), in which a catheter is used to open a blocked coronary artery, often with a stent.

Effient has been shown to reduce the combined rate of cardiovascular death, nonfatal heart attack, or nonfatal stroke compared to clopidogrel — with the benefit driven mainly by fewer heart attacks.
