Angelica Archangelica and Maprotiline

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

Photosensitizing Drugs

Why this applies to Maprotiline

Maprotiline falls under Photosensitizing Drugs — the group Angelica Archangelica interacts with.

Angelica archangelica, whether ingested or applied to the skin, has the potential to induce photosensitivity reactions. It is advised that patients using Angelica archangelica in any form should avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight. When combined with photosensitizing drugs like doxycycline, there is an elevated risk of photosensitivity reactions. Patients should be cautioned to take appropriate sun protection measures and monitor for any signs of skin irritation or photosensitivity when using these substances concomitantly. Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence C

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: this isn't about how your body breaks down maprotiline. Instead, it's about your skin and the sun. Maprotiline can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight on its own, and Angelica archangelica contains natural compounds called furanocoumarins that do the same thing. Stack the two together and you may sunburn faster or break out in a rash after even modest time outdoors.

This is rated as a possible, moderate concern with fairly limited evidence, so don't panic. If you use this herb in any form (taken by mouth or on your skin), be smart about sun protection: sunscreen, a hat, and covering up. Watch for redness or irritation, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing the two.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Maprotiline page

“The riskiest pairing on this page belongs to lithium. Taken alongside a serotonergic antidepressant like maprotiline (Ludiomil), it can both mask and raise the odds of serotonin syndrome, a dangerous buildup of serotonin activity, and it earns one of the list's two major ratings for that reason.”

About Angelica Archangelica

What is Angelica Archangelica?

Angelica Archangelica
  • Digestive upset and gas
  • Loss of appetite
  • Anxiety and restlessness
  • Mild respiratory complaints
  • Flavoring in foods and drinks

Angelica archangelica is a tall aromatic herb used traditionally for digestive complaints, poor appetite, and to flavor foods and liqueurs. Solid human evidence for its health benefits is limited, and its skin-sensitizing furanocoumarins mean caution is warranted. Pregnant and breastfeeding people should avoid it, and anyone considering it should check with a pharmacist or doctor first.
