Here's the simple version: ofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that can already make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, so you may sunburn faster than usual while taking it. Certain goosefoot-family plants like arrach have also been linked to photosensitivity, meaning they may do the same thing. Put them together and the worry is that you could be a bit more prone to sunburn, redness, or a rash on sun-exposed skin.

I want to be honest, though: this is a theoretical concern based on plant chemistry, not solid human studies, so it's not a reason to panic. Either way, ofloxacin alone is enough reason to use sunscreen, wear a hat, and limit strong sun. Check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing any herb with this antibiotic.

Arrach (Chenopodium vulvaria) is a strong-smelling European herb that has been used in traditional folk medicine, mainly for menstrual and nervous complaints. There is very little modern scientific evidence to show that it works or is safe, so it is not recommended, especially during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using any herbal product.

About Ofloxacin

What Is Ofloxacin Used For?

Brand names: Oflox, Floxin, Floxin Injection, Floxin Otic

Ofloxacin is used in several different forms, each approved for specific infections. The otic (ear) solution treats outer ear infections (otitis externa) in patients 6 months and older, chronic middle ear infections with a ruptured eardrum (chronic suppurative otitis media) in patients 12 and older, and acute middle ear infections in children 1 year and older who have ear tubes. The ophthalmic (eye) solution — including the brand Ocuflox — treats bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye) and bacterial corneal ulcers.

Ofloxacin oral tablets treat adults with mild to moderate bacterial infections including community-acquired pneumonia, skin and skin structure infections, gonorrhea, chlamydial infections of the urethra or cervix, mixed urethral/cervical infections, and acute pelvic inflammatory disease. The oral tablet is also used for acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis and uncomplicated cystitis, but only when no other treatment options are available, due to serious risk concerns with this drug class.
