Nephrotoxic Drugs
Why this applies to Methyclothiazide
Methyclothiazide falls under Nephrotoxic Drugs — the group Asian Water Plantain interacts with.
Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..
Here's the gist with methyclothiazide (Enduron, Aquatensen) and Asian water plantain. The concern isn't about one changing how the other is broken down. Instead, both put a little extra workload on your kidneys. Methyclothiazide is a water pill that pushes your kidneys to flush out salt and fluid, and in very high animal doses, water plantain showed signs of kidney stress. The worry is that stacking two things that lean on the kidneys could add up.
Honestly, this is a minor and unlikely interaction in people. The red flags only showed up at huge doses in animals, not at normal use. Still, since you're already on a diuretic, I'd run any water plantain supplement past your pharmacist or doctor first, and watch for dizziness, unusual thirst, or changes in how much you urinate.

About Asian Water Plantain
What is Asian Water Plantain?
- Promoting urination (diuretic)
- Fluid retention and swelling
- Urinary discomfort
- Cholesterol and heart health support
- Kidney and bladder support
Asian water plantain (Ze Xie) is a rhizome long used in traditional Chinese medicine, mainly as a diuretic and for fluid retention. Modern evidence is mostly limited to laboratory and animal studies, so its benefits in people are not well proven, and quality human safety data are lacking. Talk with a pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
About Methyclothiazide
What Is Methyclothiazide Used For?
Brand names: Enduron, Aquatensen
-
Methyclothiazide is used to treat high blood pressure. Methyclothiazide is also used to treat edema (fluid retention; excess fluid held in body tissues) caused by various medical problems, including heart, kidney, and liver disease and to treat edema caused by using certain medications including estrogen and corticosteroids. Methyclothiazide is in a class of medications called diuretics ('water pills'). It works by causing the kidneys to get rid of unneeded water and salt from the body into the urine.
-
High blood pressure is a common condition and when not treated, can cause damage to the brain, heart, blood vessels, kidneys and other parts of the body. Damage to these organs may cause heart disease, a heart attack, heart failure, stroke, kidney failure, loss of vision, and other problems. In addition to taking medication, making lifestyle changes will also help to control your blood pressure. These changes include eating a diet that is low in fat and salt, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising at least 30 minutes most days, not smoking, and using alcohol in moderation.
