Nephrotoxic Drugs
Why this applies to Rifampin
Rifampin falls under Nephrotoxic Drugs — the group Asian Water Plantain interacts with.
Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..
Here's the gist for rifampin and Asian water plantain (Ze Xie). This isn't a case where the herb changes how your body breaks down rifampin or makes the drug stronger or weaker. Instead, the concern is that both can be a little hard on the kidneys, so the worry is about overlapping stress, not a metabolism clash.
And honestly, the evidence here is thin. The kidney signals only showed up in animals given very high doses of the extract, far beyond what a person would normally take. In real-world use this is rated minor and unlikely. Still, since rifampin can occasionally affect the kidneys and liver on its own, it's smart to mention any supplement you're taking to your pharmacist or doctor and keep up with any lab work they order.

About Asian Water Plantain
What is Asian Water Plantain?
- Promoting urination (diuretic)
- Fluid retention and swelling
- Urinary discomfort
- Cholesterol and heart health support
- Kidney and bladder support
Asian water plantain (Ze Xie) is a rhizome long used in traditional Chinese medicine, mainly as a diuretic and for fluid retention. Modern evidence is mostly limited to laboratory and animal studies, so its benefits in people are not well proven, and quality human safety data are lacking. Talk with a pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
About Rifampin
What Is Rifampin Used For?
Brand names: Rifadin, Rimactane, Rifadin Injection, Rofactor
Rifampin treats all forms of tuberculosis. It is always used as part of a combination of TB medicines, not on its own.
It also treats asymptomatic meningococcal carriers. These are people who carry the bacteria Neisseria meningitidis in the nose and throat without being sick. Rifampin is not used to treat an actual meningococcal infection.
Rifampin capsules are taken by mouth. Rifadin IV and Rifampin for Injection are given through a vein for the initial treatment and retreatment of tuberculosis when the medicine cannot be taken by mouth.
