Plazomicin Sulfate falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Bacillus Coagulans interacts with.

Theoretically, taking antibiotics with Bacillus coagulans might decrease the effectiveness of B. coagulans.
B. coagulans preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. coagulans preparations by at least two hours.

Here's the simple version: this interaction works against the probiotic, not against your antibiotic. Plazomicin (Zemdri) is a powerful aminoglycoside that kills bacteria, and Bacillus coagulans is itself a live, helpful bacterium. So if the two overlap, the antibiotic may wipe out a good chunk of those probiotic organisms before they can do their job. Your plazomicin treatment for the urinary or kidney infection still works just fine.

One thing to keep in mind: plazomicin is given as an injection at a clinic or hospital, so timing it around an oral probiotic isn't always practical. If you do want to take Bacillus coagulans, a good rule of thumb is to space it a couple of hours away from antibiotics. This is based on lab reasoning rather than strong human studies, so it's a minor issue. Check with your pharmacist if you're unsure.

What Is Plazomicin Injection Used For?

Brand name: Zemdri

Zemdri (plazomicin) is approved for adults 18 and older to treat complicated urinary tract infections (cUTI), including pyelonephritis (a serious kidney infection), caused by certain susceptible bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, and Enterobacter cloacae.

Because clinical data on Zemdri are still limited, it is reserved for patients who have few or no other treatment options. It should only be used when the infection is confirmed or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria that respond to it, in order to reduce the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
