Rifamycin falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Bacillus Coagulans interacts with.
B. coagulans preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. coagulans preparations by at least two hours.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the simple version: Bacillus coagulans is a live probiotic, made of actual living bacteria. Rifamycin (Aemcolo) is an antibiotic, and its whole job is to kill or stop bacteria. So if you swallow them at the same time, the rifamycin can knock out a good chunk of the probiotic organisms before they get a chance to do anything helpful in your gut.
Notice the direction here: this doesn't make rifamycin stronger or weaker, and it doesn't add new side effects. It just means you may waste your probiotic. This is a theoretical concern based mostly on lab reasoning, so don't be alarmed. A practical fix is simply spacing them out by at least two hours. If you're taking both for travelers' diarrhea, your pharmacist can help you time them.
