Rifamycin falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Bifidobacterium Bifidum interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium. bifidum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. bifidum.
Since B. bifidum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. bifidum preparations by at least 2 hours.

Here's the thing to keep in mind: rifamycin (Aemcolo) is an antibiotic, and your Bifidobacterium bifidum supplement is made of live, active bacteria. If you swallow them at the same time, the antibiotic can kill off a good chunk of those friendly probiotic organisms before they get a chance to do their job. So the worry here isn't that rifamycin becomes stronger or weaker, it's that your probiotic may simply not work as well.

The good news is this is a theoretical concern based on how these products behave, not a dangerous reaction. A simple fix is spacing them out by at least 2 hours. Since you'd be taking both for gut and diarrhea reasons, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist about timing.

What Is Rifamycin Used For?

  • Rifamycin is used to treat of travelers' diarrhea caused by certain bacteria. Rifamycin is in a class of medications called antibiotics. It works by stopping the growth of the bacteria that cause diarrhea.

  • Antibiotics such as rifamycin will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Using antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.
