Methenamine Mandelate falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Bifidobacterium Bifidum interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium. bifidum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. bifidum.
Since B. bifidum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. bifidum preparations by at least 2 hours.

Here's the thing to keep in mind with this pairing: it's the probiotic that may take the hit, not your medication. Methenamine mandelate works as a urinary antiseptic by releasing formaldehyde to fight bacteria in the urinary tract. That germ-killing action doesn't tell the difference between unwanted bacteria and the friendly Bifidobacterium bifidum you're swallowing, so taking them at the same time could wipe out some of those live organisms before they do their job.

This is a theoretical concern based on how the drug works, not something proven in studies, so don't be alarmed. A simple fix is to space them out by at least 2 hours. Your methenamine will keep working normally either way. If you have questions, your pharmacist can help you set up a schedule.

What Is Methimazole Used For?

Brand names: Mandelamine, Methimazole

Methimazole tablets are used in adults and children with hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid) due to Graves' disease or toxic multinodular goiter when surgery or radioactive iodine is not the right option. They work to lower thyroid hormone levels and ease symptoms.

Methimazole tablets are also used to bring thyroid hormone levels down before a patient undergoes thyroidectomy (thyroid surgery) or radioactive iodine treatment, making those procedures safer.
