Chloramphenicol falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Bifidobacterium Bifidum interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium. bifidum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. bifidum.
Since B. bifidum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. bifidum preparations by at least 2 hours.

Here's the simple version: this interaction works in one direction, and it's the probiotic that loses out, not your antibiotic. Chloramphenicol kills bacteria to clear your infection, and it can't tell the difference between the harmful bugs and the friendly Bifidobacterium bifidum you swallowed. So taking them at the same time may wipe out a chunk of those live organisms, meaning you get less of the gut benefit you were hoping for.

The good news is your chloramphenicol still works just fine, and this won't make its side effects worse. To get value from the probiotic, most pharmacists suggest spacing the two doses at least 2 hours apart. This is a theoretical concern based on how the two work, not a dangerous one, but check with your doctor or pharmacist to be sure it fits your situation.

What Is Chloramphenicol Injection Used For?

Brand names: Chloromycetin, Chloromycetin Ophthalmic, Chloromycetin Injection

Chloramphenicol Sodium Succinate Injection is used intravenously to treat serious infections caused by susceptible bacteria. It is active against organisms including Haemophilus influenzae, Salmonella species (including Salmonella typhi, the cause of typhoid fever), Rickettsia, and the lymphogranuloma-psittacosis group.

Because of its serious risks, this medication is reserved for infections where less dangerous antibiotics will not work. It must not be used for minor infections such as colds, flu, or sore throats, or to prevent infections.
