Pyrazinamide falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Bifidobacterium Animalis Subsp. Lactis interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium lactis with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. lactis.
Since B. lactis preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. lactis preparations by at least 2 hours.

Here's the key thing to understand: this interaction goes one way only. Pyrazinamide is one of your tuberculosis medicines, and like other antibiotics it can kill off some of the live, helpful bacteria in your B. lactis probiotic if you swallow them at the same time. So it's really the probiotic that loses out, not your TB treatment. Pyrazinamide will keep working just fine, and this won't make its side effects (like upset stomach, mild liver irritation, or joint aches) any better or worse.

The simple fix is timing. Try to space your probiotic and your pyrazinamide by at least 2 hours so more of those good bacteria survive. This is based on how the two work together rather than hard human studies, so don't worry, but check with your pharmacist if you have questions.

What Is Pyrazinamide Used For?

Brand name: Tebrazid

Pyrazinamide tablets are used to treat active tuberculosis (TB) in adults and children. It is always used in combination with other anti-TB medicines — never alone. The standard CDC-recommended approach uses pyrazinamide as part of a 6-month regimen, typically for the first 2 months.

It is also used when initial TB treatment with other drugs has failed. People with drug-resistant TB or with HIV infection may need a treatment plan specifically tailored to their situation, which can include pyrazinamide as a key part of the regimen.
