Vancomycin Hydrochloride falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Bifidobacterium Animalis Subsp. Lactis interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium lactis with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. lactis.
Since B. lactis preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. lactis preparations by at least 2 hours.

Here's the simple version: vancomycin is an antibiotic, and the probiotic B. lactis is made of live, friendly bacteria. If you take them at the same time, the antibiotic can kill off a good chunk of those probiotic organisms before they get a chance to help. So this isn't about vancomycin becoming dangerous or less effective. It's the probiotic that loses its punch.

The good news is this is easy to work around. Just space them out by at least 2 hours. Keep in mind this concern is largely theoretical, based on how these products work rather than hard studies. If you're taking oral vancomycin for a gut infection like C. diff, definitely check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding any probiotic.

About Vancomycin

What Is Vancomycin Used For?

Brand name: Firvanq

Vancomycin is used to fight serious bacterial infections caused by certain hard-to-treat bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). When given intravenously (by IV), it treats conditions like septicemia (a serious bloodstream infection), infective endocarditis (infection of the heart valves), skin and skin structure infections, bone infections, and lower respiratory tract infections.

When taken by mouth — as capsules or oral solution (brands include Vancocin and Firvanq) — vancomycin treats Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea (C. diff) and staphylococcal enterocolitis (a gut infection caused by Staphylococcus aureus). It's important to know that the oral form does not work for bloodstream or other serious infections, and the IV form does not work for C. diff or gut infections — each route has its own specific uses.
