Armodafinil falls under DOPAMINE AGONISTS — the group Black Horehound interacts with.

Theoretically, black horehound might have additive effects when used with dopamine agonists. Some constituents of black horehound bind to dopamine D2 receptors in vitro; however, this has not yet been reported in humans. Some dopamine agonists include bromocriptine (Parlodel), levodopa (Dopar, component of Sinemet), pramipexole (Mirapex), ropinirole (Requip), and others.

Here's the honest picture for armodafinil (Nuvigil) and black horehound. The concern on file is purely theoretical. In lab dishes, some compounds in black horehound latch onto dopamine D2 receptors, and armodafinil is a wakefulness drug that nudges the dopamine system too. So in theory, taking them together might add up and stir up extra stimulation.

What that could look like with armodafinil: feeling jittery, a racing or pounding heart, trouble sleeping, headache, or anxiety. But I want to be clear, this has never actually been shown in people, only in test-tube studies, so it may amount to nothing at all. Still, since black horehound's safety isn't well studied, it's worth a quick check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Black horehound is a traditional European herb mainly used for nausea, mild anxiety, and digestive upset, but high-quality human studies are lacking, so its effectiveness is largely unproven. It has a strong, unpleasant smell and taste, and its safety has not been well studied, so it should be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding and used cautiously by everyone else.

What Is Armodafinil Used For?

Brand name: Nuvigil

Armodafinil tablets (including the brand Nuvigil) are used to improve wakefulness in adults who have excessive sleepiness linked to one of three conditions: obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), narcolepsy, or shift work disorder (SWD).

In obstructive sleep apnea, armodafinil treats the sleepiness itself — not the underlying airway obstruction. If CPAP (a breathing device worn during sleep) is the right treatment for you, your doctor should try that first before adding armodafinil for sleepiness.
