Blue-green Algae and Aspirin, Codeine Phosphate

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Aspirin, Codeine Phosphate

Aspirin, Codeine Phosphate falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Blue-green Algae interacts with.

Theoretically, spirulina blue-green algae might increase the risk of bleeding if used with other anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs. However, this is unlikely.
Spirulina blue-green algae have shown antiplatelet and anticoagulant effects in vitro. However, one preliminary study in 24 patients receiving spirulina blue-green algae 2.3 grams daily for 2 weeks showed no effect on platelet activation or measures of clotting time.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with your aspirin/codeine combo. The aspirin part already thins the blood a bit by making platelets less sticky. Lab studies hint that blue-green algae (like spirulina) may also have a mild blood-thinning effect, so the worry is that stacking the two could, in theory, nudge your bleeding risk up. Think easier bruising, nosebleeds, or a cut that takes longer to stop.

The good news: this is only a theoretical concern based on test-tube data, and a small human study using spirulina daily showed no real change in clotting. So for most people it's unlikely to cause trouble. Still, since both touch bleeding, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first, especially if you bruise easily or take other blood thinners.

About Blue-green Algae

What is Blue-green Algae?

Blue-green Algae
  • General nutrition and energy
  • Antioxidant support
  • Cholesterol and metabolic health
  • Immune support
  • Weight management

Blue-green algae are nutrient-rich aquatic microorganisms (such as spirulina and Klamath Lake algae) taken as a supplement for energy, nutrition, and general wellness. Evidence for most health claims is limited, and some products can be contaminated with toxins or heavy metals, so quality testing matters. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using, especially during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
