Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for your Metaglip (that's glipizide plus metformin). Both of these medicines already work to bring your blood sugar down, with glipizide being the one most likely to dip it too low. The thought is that blueberry, especially concentrated leaf extracts, may have a mild blood sugar lowering effect of its own. Stack that on top of your diabetes meds and, in theory, your sugar could drop a little more than expected.

The honest truth is this concern comes from lab and animal studies, not people, so it's considered minor and unlikely. Eating blueberries as a normal food is no problem. If you're thinking about high-dose blueberry capsules or leaf extracts, just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads up and keep an eye out for shakiness, sweating, or feeling lightheaded.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Glipizide, Metformin page

“Glipizide and metformin (Metaglip) already work hard to pull blood sugar down, which is exactly why this list of 307 ingredients deserves genuine vigilance rather than a shrug. Most of them, 239, can lower glucose on their own, and stacked on this pill the combined effect can tip into true hypoglycemia.”

About Blueberry

What is Blueberry?

  • Antioxidant support
  • Heart health
  • Brain and memory health
  • Blood sugar support
  • Eye health
  • Urinary health

Blueberries are a nutritious fruit rich in antioxidants called anthocyanins, and eating them as part of a balanced diet is healthy and safe for most people. Concentrated supplements are marketed for heart, brain, and blood sugar health, but the evidence is mostly early and not strong enough to promise specific benefits. Enjoy blueberries as food, and talk to your pharmacist before using high-dose extracts.
