Emtricitabine falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Buchu interacts with.

Buchu contains pulegone, a known hepatotoxin. There is some concern that buchu may adversely affect the liver, especially when the leaf is used in large doses or the oil is ingested. Theoretically, concomitant use with hepatotoxic drugs might increase the risk of liver damage. Here's the gist: buchu's essential oil contains a compound called pulegone that can be hard on the liver, especially in concentrated supplement doses or if you swallow the oil itself. Emtricitabine (Emtriva) is generally one of the gentler HIV medicines on the liver, but like many drugs it's still processed there, so the worry is about adding two liver stressors together rather than buchu changing how the drug works.

I'll be honest with you, this is a theoretical concern based on how these things behave, not from real cases pairing the two. Still, since staying on your HIV regimen matters so much, I'd skip strong buchu supplements or the oil and check with your pharmacist or doctor first. Occasional tea-like culinary amounts are far less of a concern than concentrated doses.

Emtricitabine — sold as Emtriva (capsule and oral solution) and as generic emtricitabine capsules — is used to treat HIV-1 infection. It is always taken together with other antiretroviral (HIV-fighting) medicines, never alone.

Emtriva oral solution is an option for younger children and patients who cannot swallow capsules. Both forms are FDA-approved for this single purpose: treating HIV-1 infection as part of a combination regimen.
