Amoxicillin falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Buchu interacts with.

Buchu contains pulegone, a known hepatotoxin. There is some concern that buchu may adversely affect the liver, especially when the leaf is used in large doses or the oil is ingested. Theoretically, concomitant use with hepatotoxic drugs might increase the risk of liver damage. Some of these drugs include acarbose (Precose, Prandase), amiodarone (Cordarone), atorvastatin (Lipitor), azathioprine (Imuran), carbamazepine (Tegretol), cerivastatin (Baycol), diclofenac (Voltaren), felbamate (Felbatol), fenofibrate (Tricor), fluvastatin (Lescol), gemfibrozil (Lopid), isoniazid, itraconazole, (Sporanox), ketoconazole (Nizoral), leflunomide (Arava), lovastatin (Mevacor), methotrexate (Rheumatrex), nevirapine (Viramune), niacin, nitrofurantoin (Macrodantin), pioglitazone (Actos), pravastatin (Pravachol), pyrazinamide, rifampin (Rifadin), ritonavir (Norvir), rosiglitazone (Avandia), simvastatin (Zocor), tacrine (Cognex), tamoxifen, terbinafine (Lamisil), valproic acid, and zileuton (Zyflo)

Here's the connection in plain terms. Buchu leaves contain a compound called pulegone, which in large amounts (think concentrated buchu oil or heavy supplement doses) can be tough on the liver. Amoxicillin, while usually gentle, is on a list of medicines that can occasionally stress the liver too. So the worry is simply that stacking two things that lean on your liver might add up.

I want to be honest though: this is theoretical, based on how these ingredients behave on paper, not on real cases with this combo. Amoxicillin is not a prodrug, and buchu doesn't change how it works against your infection. Liver upset from amoxicillin is rare, but watch for yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual tiredness. A quick chat with your pharmacist clears this up.

Buchu is a fragrant South African shrub whose leaves are traditionally used for urinary and bladder complaints and as a diuretic. Solid human studies are lacking, so its benefits are largely unproven, and it should be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding. What Is Amoxicillin Used For?

Brand names: Amoxil Capsules, Trimox, Wymox, Amix, Amoram, Amoxident, Galenamox, Rimoxallin, Amoxil Injection

Amoxicillin treats bacterial infections in both adults and children, including ear, nose, and throat infections; lower respiratory tract infections; skin and skin structure infections; and genitourinary tract infections.

In adults only, amoxicillin is also used — always combined with other medications — to eradicate Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), the bacteria behind duodenal ulcers. Getting rid of H. pylori has been shown to reduce the chance of those ulcers coming back. It is only effective against bacteria that are susceptible to it and will not work against viral infections like the common cold or flu.
