This combo cold product has three pieces, but the one that matters here is the dextromethorphan (the cough suppressant). Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to clear dextromethorphan out. Calamus has shown in lab testing that it can block that same enzyme. If it does the same thing in people, dextromethorphan could build up and hit harder, meaning more dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, or that floaty, confused feeling some folks get.

Now, the honest part: this is only a theoretical concern from test-tube research, not real human studies, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. That said, calamus carries its own safety baggage and is best avoided anyway. If you're taking both, just run it past your pharmacist or doctor first.

Here's the gist with this combo cough and cold product (Organidin NR, Anatuss DM). Calamus has been shown in test tube studies only to block an enzyme called CYP3A4, which is one of the pathways your body uses to clear the dextromethorphan part. In theory, if that pathway slows down, dextromethorphan could build up a bit, which might mean more drowsiness, dizziness, or in larger amounts that floaty, off feeling some people get.

I want to be honest though: this is only lab-based evidence, not something proven in real people, so the actual risk is uncertain. The bigger concern is calamus itself, since the FDA banned it from foods over safety worries. I'd skip the calamus and check with your pharmacist before mixing the two.

Calamus is a swamp plant with a long history in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine, mostly for digestive and nervous-system complaints. However, it contains beta-asarone, a compound linked to cancer and other toxic effects in animal studies, which is why the U.S. FDA banned it from foods. Because of these safety concerns and a lack of solid human evidence, it is generally best avoided.
