Your body relies on an enzyme called CYP2D6 to clear dextromethorphan, the cough suppressant in Vicks Formula 44. Lab studies suggest calamus can slow that enzyme down. If it does, dextromethorphan may hang around longer than usual, which could nudge up its typical side effects like drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, or feeling a bit foggy or unsteady.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It comes from test-tube research only, not from people, so we really don't know how much it matters in everyday life. That said, calamus carries its own safety concerns (it contains beta-asarone, which the FDA banned from foods), so I'd steer clear of it regardless. Before combining anything, please check with your pharmacist or doctor.

Calamus is a swamp plant with a long history in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine, mostly for digestive and nervous-system complaints. However, it contains beta-asarone, a compound linked to cancer and other toxic effects in animal studies, which is why the U.S. FDA banned it from foods. Because of these safety concerns and a lack of solid human evidence, it is generally best avoided.
