Levorphanol is a strong opioid pain reliever, and one of its main effects is calming down your central nervous system. That can mean drowsiness, slowed breathing, low blood pressure, confusion, or feeling unsteady. Calamus appears to work in a similar calming direction, partly by raising a brain chemical called GABA. So the worry here is simply too much of the same effect stacked together, leaving you more sedated than you expect.

I want to be honest about the evidence: this comes from animal and lab studies, not human trials, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Still, with a potent opioid like this, even added drowsiness matters. On top of that, calamus has its own safety concerns and is best avoided anyway. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Calamus is a swamp plant with a long history in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine, mostly for digestive and nervous-system complaints. However, it contains beta-asarone, a compound linked to cancer and other toxic effects in animal studies, which is why the U.S. FDA banned it from foods. Because of these safety concerns and a lack of solid human evidence, it is generally best avoided.

It is not meant for everyday or mild pain. Prescribers weigh the serious risks of opioid therapy carefully before choosing this medication, and it should be used for only as long as the pain requires it.
