Here's the thinking behind this pairing. Meclizine works partly by blocking acetylcholine, which helps calm the signals that cause motion sickness, nausea, and dizziness. Calamus, in lab studies, seems to do the opposite by slowing down the enzyme that breaks acetylcholine down, leaving more of it around. So in theory, calamus could push back against meclizine and make it work a little less well, meaning your motion sickness or dizziness might not be controlled as nicely.

I'll be honest with you though: this is only based on test-tube research, not real people, so we don't know if it truly matters in everyday use. Calamus also has its own safety worries (the FDA banned it from foods), so I'd steer clear of it regardless. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Calamus is a swamp plant with a long history in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine, mostly for digestive and nervous-system complaints. However, it contains beta-asarone, a compound linked to cancer and other toxic effects in animal studies, which is why the U.S. FDA banned it from foods. Because of these safety concerns and a lack of solid human evidence, it is generally best avoided.

What Is Meclizine Used For?

Brand names: Antivert, Ru-Vert M, Medivert

Meclizine is used to prevent and treat nausea, vomiting, and dizziness associated with motion sickness. This use is supported across many meclizine products, including Bonine, Bonine Max, Dramamine, Dramamine Less Drowsy, Dramamine-N, Naus-ease, CVS Motion Sickness Fast Melting, and Wal-Dram 2 Quick-Dissolving, among others.

Prescription-strength meclizine hydrochloride tablets are also indicated for treating vertigo — a spinning sensation — associated with diseases that affect the vestibular system (the inner ear balance system) in adults. Naus-ease film strips and tablets also list vertigo treatment as an indication.
