Here's the gist with nadolol and calamus. Nadolol is a beta blocker, so it already works to slow your heart rate and lower your blood pressure. Animal studies suggest calamus may do something similar, gently easing down heart rate and the force of each beat. Put the two together and those effects could stack on top of each other.

If that happened, you might notice dizziness, lightheadedness, unusual tiredness, or a pulse that feels too slow, especially when standing up. To be clear, this is theoretical and based only on lab and animal work, not human studies, so I wouldn't panic. Still, calamus has real safety concerns of its own (it's banned from foods in the U.S.), so I'd skip it and check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding any new supplement.

Calamus is a swamp plant with a long history in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine, mostly for digestive and nervous-system complaints. However, it contains beta-asarone, a compound linked to cancer and other toxic effects in animal studies, which is why the U.S. FDA banned it from foods. Because of these safety concerns and a lack of solid human evidence, it is generally best avoided.

What Is Nadolol Used For?

Brand names: Corgard, Nadolol

Nadolol tablets are used for two main conditions: high blood pressure (hypertension) and angina pectoris (ongoing chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart). Lowering high blood pressure reduces the risk of stroke and heart attack.

For high blood pressure, nadolol may be prescribed on its own or combined with other blood pressure medications, especially thiazide-type diuretics (water pills). For angina, it is used for long-term management to help reduce how often chest pain occurs.
